Extreme Engineering: Building Hong Kong's Airport

Part 5/5

For decades, Hong Kong's Kai Tak airport served millions of travelers who made this cosmopolitan Asian city their destination of choice. But Kai Tak, situated in the heart of town, quickly outgrew its original mission, and it became clear a new airport needed to be built. Join Hong Kong's engineers and architects as they design a travel hub located 16 miles out to sea, requiring a massive land reclamation and the restructuring of two islands.

Hong Kong International Airport (IATA: HKG, ICAO: VHHH) is the main airport in Hong Kong. It is colloquially known as Chek Lap Kok Airport (赤鱲角機場), because it was built on the island of Chek Lap Kok by land reclamation, and also to distinguish it from the old Hong Kong Airport (Kai Tak).

The airport opened for commercial operations in 1998, replacing Kai Tak Airport, and is an important regional trans-shipment centre, passenger hub and gateway for destinations in China, East Asia and Southeast Asia. Despite a relatively short history, Hong Kong International Airport has won several notable international "Best Airport" awards. In 2001-2005 and 2007 - 2008, it came first in Skytrax's World Airport Awards, and second in 2006.

  • i bet somebody got canned on the first day.....guy who deleted the important data...lol

  • @7boon Oh, I seez.

  • @andrewthebestes There was Super Typhoon Megi which was predicted to make a direct strike on HK. But the path of the storm somehow moved away and weakened. There's the joke that Lee Ka Shing deployed a force to prevent typhoons from hitting Hong Kong in order to make more profits for himself.

  • I have to doff my hat to HONG KONG for organising, managing and completing this Gigantic and tasking project in a short space of time. Its really an extreme project and a very rare one too but it all shows how the impossible can be made possible only in the name of ENGiNEERING.. .Fantastic.. I love stuffs like this. its so entertaining and interesting

  • Well, the hurricane season in 2010 is over. Looks like the typhoon will have to choose another year

  • One word after watching all 5 parts: Terrific.

  • @7boon Is there some news article about this? And how did they know what weather it would be six years in the future?

  • @andrewthebestes It almost happened a few days ago. But 李氏力場 prevented that.

  • @sdgsdgsdgsd3 So has it happened yet?
