  • @DustyCarnage This song long predates the play. RIP all those who died for Britain.

  • @Wormtail96 Too right! A good ol' British song to arouse the spirits! I'll never forget the sacrifice of our boys in both wars; R.I.P. lads.

  • I don't think it was a lovely war

  • @DustyCarnage no it isnt, its a period song; the play wasnt written for another 50 years

  • It is an anti-war song... If you've seen the show you'd understand... It's very satirical and sarcastic

  • It isn’t. I served in the British Army & I understand the humour: take the Mick, it makes you feel better. As for the war itself, my grandfather, great grandfather, & all of my great uncles on both sides of my family fought in it, I realise only too well it was no picnic: 5 of my relatives were killed in action, one died of wounds. All the others were wounded, often multiple wounds at different times. But it isn't anti war. The troops weren't anti war they most definitely wanted to win & did!

  • call me old fashioned but i love the ww1 and ww2 tunes, they are jolly banter

  • Written in 1917 by J P Long & Maurice Scott.

The British were ill prepared in terms of rations in 1914, but jam was plentiful and the empty containers were put to a variety of uses, including bombs. Regardless of whether other flavours were available or not, it seemed to the soldiers, at least in the early part of the war, that everything was "Ticklers plum and apple" jam. Consider, if the Pythonites had been born a few decades earlier we might be deleting jam instead of spam from our email.

  • xD sorry. but this is an anti war song, It shouldnt arouse your spirits. It's from a play called Oh, It's a lovely War! which is a comedy, anit war play set on pointing out how stupid it is. If your "aroused" by the sergeant bringing you breakfast in bead. Don;t join the army. xD

  • One of the guys ounds like Hans from Allo Alllo
