The rationale for affirmative action in the US was never consistently or convincingly made clear to most people. As we get farther and farther away from the height of the Civil Rights Movement, people understandably wonder why we still need these programs, particularly among young people who have never witnessed de jure segregation. The speaker will provide context to the purpose of affirmative action, then and now, and rebut the growing sentiment that America doesn't need it anymore.
