Racing a 1-ton Chev 2 wheel drive truck on a frozen lake. Intro is starting the bad beast in -22 degree celcius weather with no block heater and 20 seconds of glowplugs.

About the beast:
It is a 1-ton, 2 Wheel drive, 6.2L Diesel (Turbocharged), 4-speed, 4-door, long box with 4:10 gears and non-posi (open diff). It is also open exhaust - straight back from the turbo.

The Track:
The track isn't marked and it is hard to see and get a feel for the speeds. I have a previous video on ice racing my truck, but this time I strapped the camera to my dash and captured a few laps. The course is approximately 2kms long. It is setup on Barnes Lake in Central/Northern British Columbia, Canada. Average race car on the track was 2minutes 10seconds when using winter tires. I have 40% tread life all-season radials on this pig. My best lap time was 2minutes and 35seconds.

Unfortunately, race rules do not allow pickups to race. Us red-necks where force to enjoy this fun after the racers were done for the day.

Check it ... I know it is long, but Lap three is my fastest lap. Use the timer on the video to track my lap times.

  • the old 6.2d with a turbo. i hear that they were good stuff

  • I wasn't a Chevy fan before I found this truck ... now - I wouldn't be without it.

Gutless wonders, but still worth their weight.

  • I'd like to see this from out side, sounds good.

  • So would I. I tried to get someone or somewhere to mount a camera while I do laps on this track, but alas, it turned out to be a one man show. I will try the next time I head out there.

  • @farmboy120

check injection timing and airfilter, also get injectors tested, they may be dripping.

Another obvious thing is tyre pressures, keep em pumped up they really sap the mpg.

  • i drove it 100 miles everyday. got 12-15 mpg. didnt matter if i was on flat ground or pullin a hill empty.

  • that's odd my 6.2L is a old military engine converted to 12v with about 200K on it and the tranny is a th400 with a tow kit and geared in the rear to tow and it get between 22-26 all the time. i never have gotten less then 22 or more then 26mpg

  • my 1991 cucv m1009 blazer has the same engine just no turbo that is a banks on that one right anyway my 6.2 in the blazer is at 500,000 miles and i put transmisson fluid in my diesel i do not think it would have gotten that high with the factory engine with no rebuilds if it was'nt for the trany fulid

  • wanting new friends

im on cam and bored tz

  • What brand of turbo kit? Banks, ATS, or what? Love the truck! Those 6.2L's wherent power houses, but they did what they were build for great!

  • even if i baby it i still get at the most 15 mpg. i think its because it has 225,000 on the original 6.2. i don't know could be wrong about that

  • diesel power is awesome. diesel in dirt devine

  • Mine is turbo - and I am sure it is an aftermarket setup. The factory AC was upgraded by the previous owner. I am averaging 23 to 25 mpg if I keep it under 60mph.
