Spitfire to be displayed in Mold for Battle of Britain commemorations

CELEBRATIONS of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain will be given a lift in Mold next week with the arrival of a Spitfire fighter jet.

The replica jet, owned by the D-Day Revisited charity based in Hawarden, raises money to send war veterans on trips to Normandy. It will be lent to Mold Salutes to display outside the 1940s Gala Evening held at Clwyd Theatr Cymru on Saturday, August 21.

John Davies of Mold Salutes said: "This is about two charities working together.

"We want to raise money for Help the Heroes and the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust and celebrate the turning point in Britain's fight against the Nazis.

"John Phipps of D-Day Revisited wants to raise money for veterans to go back to the site of the D Day Normandy landings."

The plane will be part of a six day calendar of events, which kick off in Mold on Tuesday.

Highlights include a Battle of Britain Commemoration Lecture Evening in the Clwyd Room, Clwyd Theatr Cymru, at 7.30pm on Wednesday.

It will open with squadron leader Tony Pickering who flew Hurricanes during the battle, having been based at both RAF Sealand and RAF Hawarden before being posted to Biggin Hill.

Battle of Britain expert Geoff Simpson will follow.

There will also be showings of classic films Battle of Britain, Reach for the Sky and The Way to the Stars at the theatre's cinema.

Also, between 10.30am and hourly until 3.30pm on Wednesday a shuttle bus will operate from the lay-by near the bus station in Chester Street for a 'Guided walking tour of the secret former Valley works at Rhydymwyn'.
