all you need is a pulley bearing. luckily for you , you can remove the end plate of the pulley without removing the compressor. i just did mine and it only cost me twenty bucks for the bearing. basically you just remove a ten mm screw that holds the cap on then remove a retaining ring then pull off the pulley. the bearing is in the pulley. borrow a free puller from autozone if y ou can't pull the pulley off by hand.

Thank you for posting this. It was the key to solving the same issue I was having on my 2007 2.0L.

I had already changed the AC clutch , and my car engine was very smooth but the noise came back after a month. Now, im assuming there's something wrong with the compressor. I'll see if my mechanic can bypass the compressor.

that's the exact sound my mazda6 is making. do you know if it's possible to bypass the ac compressor pulley?

This is exactly what is happened to mine. Going to cost me over $800.00 to get it fixed. My bearing seized up though. Smoke and sparks flying all over the place. The clutch/bearing is all that is going to be replaced right now. Hopefully, that is all otherwise it will be another $550.00 dollars for the compressor too. Total price if both have to replaced - around $1200.00!!!
doesn't the belt also connect to the alternator?

@bbtushar No, the AC belt doesn't run anything but the AC.

so you're just running a smaller belt or none at all?

No belt at all.

did you replace just the clutch or the compressor too?

@stiengineer
Neither. I cut the belt off. Not much use for the AC since I live in Canada and drive my Miata most of the summer.
