Herbal Mayan Medicine - The Fundacion Haciendas del Mundo Maya

Herbolaria Mayan traditional Medicine:

The principal aim in this project is to provide the community with a cheaper and sustainable alternative to modern medicine, rescuing all the traditional knowledge about local plants and their medicinal usage. The project enabled medical centres to be developed in 7 different communities, including the provision of training for locals as traditional healers. As part of the promotion of traditional Mayan medicine a Botanical Garden was created, in this Garden the community keeps more than 230 species of plants divided in 8 sections according to how the plants are used including medicinal herbs. The community also conducts research and updates records relating to classification and dissemination of species. The garden has a particular interest in collecting all the original Mayan names and the traditional use of each herb.
