Because Angie was the original Mame, and also can actually sing. Lucille Ball was more film comedienne than stage actress.

I love Lucy and I love Mame and I saw the original with Angela & Bea. I wish the movie had gone to Angela but Warners wanted Lucy. They signed on on the strong box office of Yours, Mine and Ours. Lucy used no powers to get the role - Warners wanted her badly. They considered no one else. By the time it got fllmed. Lucy had aged and it became what it became. Lucy, perhaps miscast, is no villain here. She was offered a great part and took it. Blame Jack Warner, not Lucy.

This gentleman is, in my opinion, Peter Shaw, Angelas husband.

If I may, who is the gentelman that came out at the end and looked liked he surprised Angela? I would have KILLED to have seen Andela and Bea on stage doing Mame!

I couldn't agree more, wouldn't it have been great if they had persuaded Doris Day to take over the role. She would have brought so much more to the excellent songs.

That's a response? Boorish, unintelligent, inane, desperate - in other words, totally representative of you.

Lucille Ball ruined the film version.

She was in the musical. And it doesn't sound like a put down at all - just an assessment of talent. Grow up.

No, ass. They're clapping because of her legendary performance in the role and for her legendary career in the theatre. What an ignorant idiot you are!
