Did you ever wonder where Japanese words came from? Word origins are not only an interesting way to see how language developed, but it is also great for remembering vocabulary. In this series, we will show you the origins of some common words and phrases in the Japanese language.

  • Ohayou comes from OHAYAI DESU NE, an expression that japanese people used in the past to notice and to praise someone for being awaken so early. With the pass of time, the word was abbreviated and used as a morning greeting. It came firstly from KANSAIBEN. I don't know if people from tokyo know about it, because they're HYOUJYUNGO. :)
