In a 1980-81 Perspectives of New Music article titled "Rochberg the Progressive," Jay Reise contends that the aesthetic argument made by Rochberg's Third Quartet had overshadowed its technical achievements. In this presentation, Dr. Robert Gross of Rice University analyzes the five movements from a post-tonal prolongational perspective to show even further overlooked aspects of the piece's total integration despite the seeming appearance of vastly disparate aesthetic landscapes.
