In 1899 the Great Western Railway opened a station at Goodwick (near Fishguard). Several years later they opened Fishguard Harbour which became the end of the main line and a major ferry port for Ireland.

However, in 1964 all the stations on the Fishguard line except "Fishguard Harbour" were closed ("Fishguard & Goodwick" did get a seasonal motorail train until 1982), with the train service cut back to a few ferry-connections only, useless for locals.

Now, in July 2010 with the threat of climate change, Fishguard Harbour reveives... 2 trains per day. One at 1:30pm connecting with a ferry and the other in the dead of night, 1:50am, also connecting with a ferry. In the summer there is a fast cat ferry, even this does not have a train to meet it at Fishguard. "Fishguard & Goodwick" station, suituated closer to habitation and with a very attractive building has been left to rot, litraly as the building is made from wood.

Recently however two school pupils set up a Fishguard Trains Petition attracting over a thousand signatures. However as yet no services have been added and there has been no commitment to provide any.

  • Interesting video, and now 5 trains per day are to start at the end of this year!!

The council have bought the old Fishguard/Goodwick station shown on the video, But they say its for developement in line with the new mariner not the trains? do you know what is actually happening with that?

  • @jimmy3d0 Where did you here that the Fishguard & Goodwick station purchase was to do with the mariner?

The old stories I've heard are that they propose to put an intermodal freight terminal on the site, but no indication of whether the station would stay or not. There's also proposals for a bus/rail interchange on the site, so maybe they expect to put both the intermodal terminal and the station on the same site.
