On May 22, 2009 during a Maritime Heritage Ceremony, a wreath was placed in the water off the NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson in memorial for all mariners lost at sea. The day remembers not only those lost mariners, but it also celebrates the mariners of today and the future, who have all helped to shape our great Nation. The Thomas Jefferson is homeported in Norfolk, VA and the ceremony took place at the Half Moon Terminal next to Nauticus. NOAA, the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, and the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary staff participated in the day's events, which were hosted by Channel 13's Joe Flanagan.
