Came as a boy from India. Served as an apprentice in Denny's from 1956-1962. The image that sticks with me mostly is that of the yard gates opening up and people spewing out in their thousands - it's an abiding image, the first person squeezing out that narrow gap in the gate as it opens and on the other side the security men trying to hold you back. That ritual was played out every night reinforcing the difference between them and us. The yard closed in 1963. Ghost town followed!

I was at school in Dumbarton from1988 to 1990 (Keil School) and the town centre was busy with alot of shops such as Burtons, woolworths, w h smith and so on.
Now the place looks like a war zone and from what I hear the gangs and junkies seem to be a huge problem. There was always problems with neds but now I am glad I am not anywhere near the place. You just have to at other postings on you tube to see why !!!

I used to work in the High Street, but left to work in Cbank, I'd rather get the train home from Cbank that wait for a bus in the High Street in the evening.
I can't even remember the last time I was down there, and I only stay 15mins away.
Friends have told me that another 2 shops have closed, Bodycare and Pure.
Not been there to see for myself right enough.

Hey, um, I realize I'm stumbling into something here, but I'm kind of interested by all the comments. I was wondering, what is the ideal kind of building that the everyone here wants? What is it that makes Dumbarton special in your minds?

Good luck with the Burgh Bar. I hope it works out for you.

Sorry to do this over several postings but youtube has a maximum 500 character allowance per message.
What we can all do is never give up! After the publicity for this video in the local press this week the council have voted to hold a feasibility study into opening up the street to customers again. It is not going to be a magic wand and the centre will not immediately recover

It will be a long slog of hard work to regain peoples' confidence.
Before the councilors took their brave decision, a council official was quoted in this weeks local press. He claimed in the wake of Paisley's decision to scrap their traffic management scheme that WDC had never cited Paisley as best practice and that WDC had always said that each town has unique problems

. SORRRY! I have kept the literature and photos from WDC events which were festooned with photos of and references to Paisley and have passed them on to the papers. As for each town having unique problems the EDAW action plan adopted by WDC in 2000 contains HARDLY ANYTHING which is unique to Dumbarton and is instead a very poor and disjointed document which contains a mish-mash of quotes from other publications.

There should be a public enquiry in to the way that the buffoons at Garshake Rd have wasted millions of pounds creating the retail desert in this video. One official with almost the entire alphabet after his name should take particular time to reflect on the matter.
The fight continues and I would personally like to thank the SNP group at WDC and SSP member Jim Bollan along with independent councilor George Black for their momentous and bold decision this week.
