And Debussy, Mahler, Kodaly, Martucci, Respighi, Rachmaninov, Ravel, and many many other great composers, singers, and performers. It's staggering when you think about it: that he played 2nd cello in the premiere of Otello and was still conducting for television in the 1950s. We will never see the likes of this titan ever again. Never ever.

Since the Barber, Gershwin and Grofe were so-POPULAR in their day, I wouldn't think it "odd" that Toscanini excelled in THEM, also! In cold fact, I don't think there's a repertoire that he COULDN'T make a great mark (in) - opinions only, of course.

Some of my favorite Toscanini recordings that I consider "definitive" are Samuel Barber's "Adagio For Strings" (world premiere), Gershwin's "An American In Paris" and, oddly enough, Ferde Grofe's "Grand Canyon Suite."

Don't forget Sibelius - Toscanini conducted/recorded Sibelius's 4th Symphony and En Saga, and other, short pieces (of Sibelius) ... in the 1939-1952 period. The Italian could conduct MANY composers, in some of the best ways, possible.

Wagner con Toscanini si spoglia degli orpelli ed entra nello spirito sublime del suono. Non è celebrazione ma musica che vive.
