I had acid reflux problems for 12 years and a severe gastritis that dominated every aspect of my life for 8 years. I would not leave the house without acid blockers for most of my adult life and took many different drugs to counter it, with little to no effect. Because of a bloody bet who could endure eating no meat for a month I switched to a vegetarian diet. All problems were gone within 2 weeks. It might not work for all but you might have to experiement on diet to find what triggers it.

@peterminto5 no, caustic soda! :)
Sleep on your left side. Studies have shown that patients who sleep on their left sides are less likely to suffer from acid reflux. The esophagus and stomach connect at an angle. When you sleep on your right, the stomach is higher than the esophagus, allowing food and stomach acid to slide up your throat. When you're on your left, the stomach is lower than the esophagus, so gravity's in your favor.
