In this video guitar lesson we demo a cool new piece of gear made by Audix called the Cab Grabber - we show how it works and why its cool to isolate your amp cabinet and makes way to carry less gear around for live shows. Check it out and check out some of our other lessons on microphones and amp cabinet mic techniques here on our youtube channel.

  • if your playing on a small stage...your most likely playing in a small room...and if your in a small room...why would you need to mic your amp? unless its like a p.o.s. practice amp or something..

  • Keep in mind that miking your amp is not just a volume thing - its nice having the sounds come out of the multiple speakers of the PA system - fills out the sound really well - something to keep in mind - but a lot does depend on the room size and room acoustics - rock on!

  • David, have you tried turning the "grabber" around so the mic is pointing out behind the amp. Most amps are open back and this would give you even more room on stage. Try it and let us know how it sounds.

  • Will have to try turning the grabber around as per your post - experiment - yeah baby!

    rock oN!

  • this is fine as long as you can find the sweetspot of your speaker within the given range of this piece of gear... I woulld NEVER use this in a studio situation... I think this gear would be better if you could also adjust the length of the bent end... and... also the distance it is from the speaker... sometimes you need the speaker to breath before it hits the mic...

As an audio engineer I can tell you that an inch in any direction can make a HUGE difference in your sound...

  • Here are two things I see going wrong with this clip 1) the amp is going vibrate like hell and cause some buzzing 2) it's going to rip the tolex and a angry guitarist is going to stab you in the throat for messing up his boutique cork-sniffer handwired prohibitively expensive 2x12 combo

  • @UnkinglyLike You want a good mix in the PA, and you want the control to HEAR yourself in the montiors. Low stage volume is needed. After all it IS a small room, unless you like blasting people out with your 100W amp or something.

  • @UnkinglyLike To record a live show?

  • @beiz6546 thanks for the info I was about to buy 2...

  • this seems like a waste of money, i'd much rather hang the mic in front of the speaker cab than shell out a bunch of cash, imean it's designed to save space, but hanging the mic over the top of the cab, a bit of gaffer tape or even wrapping the cable around the rubber foot of the head(or the bottom of the cab) or sometimes the handle on a guitar combo does the job just aswell, i've used this for a couple of gigs where we didn't have enough stands and it worked fine

  • I know the person who created the cab grabber...Me and him are good friends

  • @chyrd

    i couldnt agree more!!!!

i bought 6 of them because i wanted to use them on my 4x12 cabs.....but they dont even reach the center of the speaker ! it does work ,though, on my VOX combo amp...

    wise thing..... : " TRY BEFORE BUY " !!

  • so easily home made lol...

  • This looks like a good thing to make yourself. If you can find a bendable mic holder, it might be ideal. Looks like the swivel, plus the angling of the head would allow you to find the sweet spot. I like to mic the amps even in small shows to allow us to control the mix; the cabinet output is mostly a monitor for the guitarist, and we can raise and lower our volume as a group much more easily. I like the recording aspect as well.
