Some years ago, I was driving through town and as I drove past the public library, I saw an incredible sight! Someone at the rear of the library was throwing out 16mm film cans hand over hand! They were converting over to videotape & for some reason - decided to just throw out the film. Needless to say - I stopped, opened my trunk, and got as many as I could!
Here is one of those films. With all the floods & tornadoes hitting the Midwest USA in Summer of 2008, I thought this clip would be a good start. Its about the flooding in the Northeast that took place after Hurricane Diane in the 1950s.
This is one of the many "school films" that we all endured & forced to watch when we were growing up. Enjoy!

  • This is how I find videos. From people throwing them out. Lawn Sales , cable companies , etc.

  • I was about 4 years old when this occurred. Hurricane Hazel and Hurricane Diane are my earliest memories. I remember my father marking the water levels on our steep front steps--scary for a little one

  • I was 9yrs old and visiting Philadelphia when this happened and only was aware of it from a letter. When I returned, some of the landscape had changed ( my aunt's home was gone), & people were either boiling water or collecting it in containers from some of the mountain streams. This film helped put me here during the crisis.

  • @DofBlueRoses That was 2 years before my birth. Thanks Diana.

  • MA got over 8 inches of rain the say Hurricane Diane came through, a record.
