These are four severely plucked baby cockatiels This is the sound that a baby bird will make when it's hungry.
If you're a new baby cockatiel owner and your baby starts making this sound and bobs it's head while refusing to eat, contact the breeder or store immediately to see if the baby should go back to be handfed a little longer. Sometimes a baby cockatiel will regress (wants to be handfed again) this is the sound of regressing also. A new baby will make these sounds even though they were completely weaned before you purchased him.. The stress of the baby leaving it's flock and caregiver could cause the baby to regress. If you're new baby isn't eating, bobs it's head and is constantly making this sound and you don't get him back to the breeder he will quickly dehydrate and die. Occasionally you may notice your baby making this sound but you do see him eating, he's just wanting cuddling and reinsurance. To help eliminate the chance of your baby regressing make sure the baby is getting enough food. Offer a constant supply of Millet the first few weeks. Millet is a healthy soft grain that is easy to eat, also warm scrambled eggs without salt or butter, whole grain bread, brown rice, diced vegetables are all great comfort foods, these foods should be given in addition to a pellet/seed. Ask the breeder what the baby was eating during it's weaning process I abundance wean, meaning...giving everything but the kitchen sink. Never avacados, raw onions, salt, sugar, dairy products, alcohol, coffee or soda! .Never put a baby on a all pellet diet without contacting your vet on how to convert from seed to pellet. I'm not a believer in all pellet diet. Pellets are dry, bland morsels, cockatiels don't drink much water and their bodies can't compensate for the dryness of the food and will overwork the kidneys and liver causing problems in the future. Cockatiels do have taste buds and enjoy a variety of good foods.
The first few days your bird may be too scared to move about the cage so clipping the millet and water within his reach will keep your bird from dehydration. I also cover 1/4 of the cage the first days as your baby will be afraid of all the new surroundings. This gives your bird a corner to hide in until he/she is ready to start exploring. Lastly.....NEVER put a cockatiel in a round cage. Cages should be square or rectangle. Wider than taller is the best because a cockatiel will not play on the bottom of a tall cage. Cockatiels are ground foragers and love walking around on the bottom of the cage, otherwise they will stay at the highest point in the cage. My cages are 18x18x35...this size allows the bird to flap its wing and move around freely and play on the bottom of the cage as well...of course if you have room a larger cage is even better. Use perches of different sizes so your bird exercises it's feet, there are many types and sizes to choose from in most stores. Good luck with your new baby! • @Lunarek Nah it's ok,he's probably rubbing his nostril on the tissue. Keep a close eyes on him though. Don't hesitate to ask any questions you might come across. Are you making sure the temperature on the formula is between 104-108 degrees? Important to have a thermometer and to pre-heat the syringe so it doesn't chill the formula. Make sure his crop is empty or almost empty before you feed again. Never mix new food with old food in the crop. Good Luck and the baby.

  • @Tiels40 Good, I'll start using that schedule. I've noticed a bit of red around his nostrils edges , is that normal? I did wipe his face last night with a soft clothe, is this the cause for this semi redness?

  • @Lunarek Is the chirping noise more like a static sound? At 10 days old the baby should only get around 5 cc's of formula. If you overfeed a baby he could aspirate into his lungs which will cause pneumonia and eventually leading to death within a few days. The schedule I use is.. 8-14 days=4-6 cc's fed at 7-11-3-7-11 15-24=7-10cc's. 7-12-5-11. 25-34=11-15cc's.7-5-11.34-44 days=11-15cc's. 7-7. 45-days and on 7pm feeding till weaned.

  • @Tiels40 He doesn't chirp the whole time, only when I touch him, I do feed him every 4 hours, and he poops... which is a good indication cause that means he's digesting. He stopped chirping now, and he's asleep I think, as for his leg, I don't really know, I've been keeping his in the nest since i got him last night. Didn't give him a chance to move around, but he does move. I feed him till his crop gets big, then stop and wait till his crop becomes flat, then i feed him again.

  • @Lunarek chirping at that age is a red flag. Are you keeping him warm enough? Feeding him the right amount and consistency of formula? Do you have a scale to weigh him on in grams for the next couple months to insure he's gaining. Also chirping noises could me pain...did the baby's leg return to normal? Can he move in circles ok? Don't hesitate giving me a call if you need to..I left my number in a private message to you and also my email. Keep me updated if you don't mind. TY

  • @Tiels40

I got him like that from the breeder, I've already done that, and he's calm, I did do round nest for him and basically stopped his legs from moving. He chirps a lot, what does that indicate?

  • Hi Lunarek. Sounds to me the baby has spayed legs...that's when the surface that the baby is standing on is too slippery and the legs or leg spreads out to the side. If you don't fix this problem NOW your baby will not be able to perch when he's older. I suggest an avian vet's help or you can do your self by making a little donut around him with tissuse. Make it around him so he fits in snuggly and his feet can't slip from under him. Do this immediately and keep him in there till his leg...

  • Hi, I have a question, I just bought a baby Cockatiel that I'm hand feeding, he's about 10 days old. What got me wondering is that the baby's right leg is streched out... and he keeps pushing on the side with it, he isn't standing on it? have you had such situation before?

This is my first, the hand feeding went great, and now i think he's asleep, but the leg is worrying me.
