People want to be a brutal from afar, revel in cruelty, sneer at empathy and view compassion as weakness. If we would own up to this value system, one could at least admire our honesty. However, instead of displaying our true values, we like to pretend we're good, just, fair and decent.

You're confusing gangs with the mafia. Gangs are often rather rag-tag groups who enjoy causing trouble for the hell of it, and often sell drugs on the side. The mafia is more focused on their businesses and eliminating competition, and are MUCH more big and complex in terms of strength and hierarchy. Gangs will often commit acts of violence for the sake of violence, whereas the mafia usually tries to avoid unnecessary bloodshed, but is far from afraid to do it, and can get pretty damn sadistic.
