Magdalene Lewis, who was appointed to Carlton Moore's seat last fall on the Fort Lauderdale City Commission, talked to the Sun Sentinel editorial board about her candidacy. Reporter Brittany Wallman also was present. Lewis talked about her work on the city's utilities advisory board. She also talked about the city responding to concerns in the northwest by sending more police in. She said she's "been in the neighborhood for many, many years, a very active person with youth, so I'm well known in the neighborhood, in the district, really.'' She's lived there since 1958. About City Manager George Gretsas: "I'm satisfied with his performance.'' About Sistrunk Boulevard's impending narrowing: "It seems to be a slow process.'' She said she'd love to see a Target or Wal-Mart on Sistrunk Boulevard so residents wouldn't have to leave the area to shop. She said Milton Jones is "sort of dragging his feet'' on the city property on Sistrunk and Northwest 7th Avenue where he is supposed to build a grocery store. She said Moore's performance was "fair.'' She said she attended his district meetings and "not at all times was I satisfied with the way he communicated.''
"I don't think people had the open line of communication with him that they needed. And I don't think he attacked certain problems that should have been attacked, so far as if one neighborhood had aproblem I don't know if he went to make sure the problem was corrected or how it could be corrected. So I would say fair.''
She said she plans to hold meetings with residents like the other commissioners do. She hasn't started doing it yet, though.
"I have been in office just since November, so not quite as organized as I want to be.''
