Malalai Joya is one of Afghanistans leading democracy activists. In 2005, she became the youngest person ever elected to the Afghan parliament. She was suspended in 2007 for her denunciation of warlords and their cronies in government. She has just written her memoir, A Woman Among Warlords: The Extraordinary Story of an Afghan Woman Who Dared to Speak Out.

She spoke in New York at the Northeast Socialist Conference on October 23, 2009.

  • Malalai Joya opened the "activism course" at the University of Ottawa on September 13, 2006. I was the professor. Malalai's moving address to a class of over 400 students and community members changed our lives. It motivated me to fight for justice and truth more vigorously than I had imaged. The thugs that fired me in 2009, are the same corporate executives that continue to legitimize Canada's grotesque war in Afghanistan, with such publicity schemes as "Project Hero" and the like.
