洛神 "The Fairy of Luoshui" is another well-known Cantonese Opera by Yam Kim Fai 任剑辉 (Ren Jian Hui in Mandarin.) The female lead is top opera diva Fong Yim Fun 芳艳芬 (Fang Yan Fen in Mandarin。) The historical tale takes place during the warring period of China's three kingdoms.

Cao Cao, a warrior who proclaimed himself king, had captured other kingdoms and killed thousands. He had many sons, two of which feature in this love story. Cao Bi, his elder son was a warrior like him. 3rd son, Cao zhi Jian was a romantic. During one of the wars, a beautiful woman was brought back as prisoner and allowed many special privileges.

Cao Zhi Jian, well-known poet fell in love with this lovely widow staying at the palace grounds. Zhi Jian engaged a matchmaker to speak to the elder Cao. However, the matchmaker had other plans. He persuaded the elder Cao to let another son, Cao Bi marry the lovely Zhen Bu. His intention was to let his own daughter marry the famous poet of the Cao family.

You are welcome. Thank you for watching. I'm glad the translation helps.

  • Thank You so much for the translation. I love the singing, now with the translation, it is much more interesting!

  • Your Chinese must be really good for you to be able to have done that. And your written English here is great. I am sure you can do a better job than me translating this opera and I could learn from you too! Thanks for taking the time to comment. I'm really glad to meet you! Jeremy

  • Thank you so much for pointing that out. I did realize something was amiss, but I wasn't sure what. My mom used to have some Opera Song books with all these lenghty operas in full. I used to read them when I was a kid so I knew something wasn't quite right.

  • I believe DVDs or VCDs are available in Cantonese-speaking communities. I do not think English subtitles are in those prints. That is the reason why I have uploaded these clips, adding the subtitles myself.

  • Hi, my mum really enjoys this video clip - thanks for uploading! Do you know where we could get a version of this (with English subtitles)? Thanks!!
