Damien vs. Moanalua HS, Friday 8/15/2011
UPDATE, 8/20/2011, 6:45 PM HST
KHON 2 reported Saturday evening that Mohika is stabilized in the Queens Medical Center Intensive Care Unit. He underwent cranial surgery to alleviate swelling and pressure to his brain.
He is responsive and alert to verbal commands from doctors and his family. KHON reported that he is heavily sedated at this time.
After being tackled and hitting the ground hard, Damien High School football player Alan Mohika appeared to shake it off—even pointing at fans with both hands.
Minutes later, it was clear that he wasn't alright.
911 was activated as Damien's trainers tended to Mohika, one of them appearing to place a finger in his mouth as if to gag him for emesis as he laid back in the bench.
Police arrived first. Fire crews arrived second with a gurney and strapped Mohika into it as ambulance Metro One began making its way to Moanalua High School's football field.
Metro One radioed to the hospital that they were several minutes away, incoming with an 18 year old male who suffered a head injury. Paramedics told the hospital that they noticed "little" trauma with the exception of head lacerations and/or abrasions.
However, paramedics also reported that they had to intubate the patient (Mohika).
KITV's late night sports report confirmed that Mohika had a seizure.
OC16's coverage of the emergency response was amazing. Their cameramen were spot on with the angles. They knew to have a few pointed at the ambulance and a few pointed at the other football players as both teams joined hands in prayer, some crying at the sight of their teammate having gone from a tough and mighty passer to a visibly unwell man with an uncertain prognosis.
