Track speed is 65? Used to be 70 and that was with freight-geared power. I once rode the Cannonbal Express with my wife some 15 years ago before the DM-30's came on line and that train HAULED !!!

Track Speed on all Diesel lines where there is no 3rd rail is present is set at 65 mph. It was never higher.

It might have felt like it was over 65 because back then the coaches were shot by the mid 80s. And when the 90s came around they were falling to pieces. The locomotives had a system called automatic speed control. (ASC) Now ASC will not let a train go faster then speed limit indicated.. MAx was 65 for those old diesels.. If they would go over they would get a few seconds to bring the speed under the limit before penalty brake application is applied.
