Folkstones singing Connaught Ranger {Lay Him Away O'er The Hillside}.

Pivate James Joseph Daly 7144396 1st Bn., Connaugh Rangers. Daly faced the firing squad in Dagshai prison on November 2, 1920,he was aged 20. His remains were taken back to Ireland, in 1970.
He was from Tyrrelspass, Co. Westmeath.

The grey dawn had crept o'er the stillness of the mountain
The dewdrops they glistened like diamonds on high
The note of the bugle had sounded the warning
A young Irish soldier was sentence to die. Chorus

Lay him away o'er the hillside
Along with the brave and the bold
Inscribe his name on the roll of fame
In letters of purest gold
"My conscience would never convict me"
He said with his last dying breath
"May God bless the true cause of freedom?
For which I am sentenced to death".

Around that old barracks square that marched the young soldier
The bandage he tore from his eyes with distain
Do you think am afraid of crying sudden hero
I die for old Ireland again and again. Chorus

Lay him away o'er the hillside
Along with the brave and the bold
Inscribe his name on the roll of fame
In letters of purest gold
"My conscience would never convict me"
He said with his last dying breath
"May God bless the true cause of freedom?
For which I am sentenced to death".

I blame not you soldiers for doing me your duty
"ame straight at my heart" where the last words he said
exposing his breast to the points of the rife
As the smoke cleared away the young soldier lay dead. Chorus

Lay him away o'er the hillside
Along with the brave and the bold
Inscribe his name on the roll of fame
In letters of purest gold
"My conscience would never convict me"
He said with his last dying breath
"May God bless the true cause of freedom?
For which I am sentenced to death".

  • Anne Carroll is her name I played in the Folkstones with Anne many years ago I met her yesterday this LP was recorded in 1968

  • Question: Does anyone on here know where men in the Irish Republic would have signed up to join the Connaught Rangers in the 1900s?

  • my family where officers in the connacht rangers for several centuries not legionaries.

  • Some would say "none," but it is a historical fact that the typical Irish person was loyal to the Crown until the harsh treatment meted out to the Easter Rebels.

    ---

And any adventure is more of an adventure if it takes place far away from home

  • what adventure could have been better than taking on the most powerfull empire in the world who dares to speak of easter week....

  • Liam your mothers from Halifax.

  • Yes and no. Pearse and Connoly could not have offered the adventure of service in India or elswhere. Men who chose to join regiments like the Connaught Rangers were a bit like Foreign Legionaries , serving for adventure as much as the King's shilling. If they were not interested in adventure, they'd have joined a regiment of no-particular distinction

  • I am English/Irish man. My Irish mother from Mayo. Long live the Connaught Rangers. True men but few for had they died by Pearse & Connolly side they would have served their people well.

  • Thanks Machree, I recently found out my Grandad was one of the mutineers and this song has helped me a lot. They were heroes every last one of them. Too young to die.
