At the microphone: the 1949 European Champion Eva Pawlik.
In the end you can see Gaby Seyfert together with Jutta Müller and Dick Button.
This is the translation of Pawlik´s commentary:
"And now you will see the lady skater that is to be considered the world´s best free skater: Gabriele Seyfert from East Germany, a three-time European Champion and the last year´s World Champion. She is 19 yo and lives in Chemnitz. She is coached by her mother, Mrs. Müller. Seyfert is currently in the second place, some 20 points behind Beatrix Schuba after the compulsory figures.
Double lutz, double loop (in German: Rittberger).
Double axel. She performs this jump in such a uniquely beautiful way. A clean take-off, the quickest rotation at the maximum height and a clean landing on the outside edge again.
Double toe-loop.
Double axel.
Double flip.
Double loop.
Double lutz.
Double loop and immediately a second one. (Admiration in the sound of Pawlik´s voice when saying immediately).
That was again a terrific performance of the reigning World and European Champion. It is respectable that she is always fit. I have never seen that Gaby would have made bad mistakes in an international competition. They told that some mistakes were slipping in at the national championships. Gaby is said to have landed some double jumps on both legs at the East German competition. However, that was not so important. It is wonderful that she always succeeds to be brilliant when it is necessary (at the Europeans and at the Worlds). She skates the same free program as last year. It wouldn´t be good to change it as it is not believable that she would do it better. For technical merit: 5.9, 5.9, 5.9, 5.8, 5.8, 5.9, 5.9, 5.9, 5.9. Perhaps you will ask yourself why no judge took the 6.0. It is not possible for the judges to do so as there are still five competitors that will show their programs. So the judges have to leave at least little space even if in their opinion Gaby will have done it best. - - Now I have said too much. One 6.0 is among the marks for the artistic impression. 6.0 comes from East Germany (Pawlik laughs a bit when saying that because in the history of figure skating the judges from the skater´s country often tend to give higher marks than the other judges), from Mrs. Grimm. The new World Champion is again Gaby Seyert."

  • I am surprized by how much she reminds me both of Carol Heiss and Dorothy Hamill......it must be a similar body build.....best wishes

  • This is a wonderful performance. She was in total command. And her difficulty level was very high for 1970. It's too bad she didnt continue through to the 1972 Olympics - I'm sure she would have won - she was always close enough in figures behind Schuba to make up that deficit.

  • @k9henrydog-Thank you. Hope you're doing okay, too. We're coping best we can w/aging parents, assisted living-very sad in a way. You know THEY have to know on some level, it's the final stop on the subway. Mother passed on 20 years ago @age 64. Dad 97,his wife is 92. They're doing as best as can be expected. I miss Gaby, too. I suppose you could say she was born at the wrong time as well as her mother - 12/12/1946. Take care. Libra

  • As I recall, Trixi Schuba's school figures were becoming impossible to overcome......Guess it's not an easy thing to give up a World title....I missed her....hope you are well....rick

  • @k9henrydog-she even has an early-albeit blonde version-of Dorothy Hamill's wedge hair cut. Not quite the same but it flares out in much the same way Dorothy's always did doing the scratch spin. I must say Jutta Mueller is very attractive. What a shame world events conspired to keep her from skating.I'll bet she would have ' sold' a program better than anyone!

  • @npe1

wow, you are not kidding about Jutta Muller.... she was quite the looker in her day!

  • A good skate and very powerful. Early 1970s were the last few years before skaters starting crossing legs in the air in jumps, which revolutionised jumping. How young does Jutta Muller look in this vid???

  • what a beautiful girl and strong skater

  • gaby wonderful!

  • What a talented skater! So much flow and grace, she was definitely near Janet Lynn's level.
