At an average rate of $200 per night/per inmate, private prison operators profit over $5 billion a year. How do they do it? Like con-artists, they lure town councils and local government officials with promises of easy money and increased revenue. However, what they don't tell them is at what cost!

Littlefield, Texas found out the hard way. Private prison operators promised increased "product" (aka detained immigrants) and alleged prosperity for a town that was struggling with an economic crisis. Instead, what Littlefield got was a mega-complex private facility, an additional $10 million contractual debt, and a fleeing population.

"an endless supply of product". Gee, nothing wrong with that picture at all right?

Whoever came up with the idea of corporate-run prisons had to have had more than few loose screws rattling around in their brain.

Human beings are a "product", and an entire town is expendable.

Incarceration rates have risen exponentially since prisons became a for-profit industry. We, as citizens, have a responsibility to make every effort possible to STOP these greedy bastards while we still can!

With this for-profit model, the government pays the company running the prison $160 a night per filled cell. Rationally, rehabilitation is against their interest, it's better for the prisoners to be even more prone to get into trouble when they leave. Anyone can see the end result; private jails bribing cops with pay bonuses for more arrests; terrifying. Of course, politicians are payed not to think about this. And this is how the average citizen gets fucked with that red white and blue dick.

In view of NDAA-2012, has no one considered that unoccupied prisons may be "needed" after all?

That'll teach them to take a profit on the incarceration of others. Prisons should never be privatized. It's immoral: it creates a corporate goal of imprisoning more people so they make more money. Sadly, too many US governments are incapable of understanding this simple truth.
