We have collected sperm of several Black-Necked Cranes (Grus Nigricollis). The storage of the samples in nitrogen tanks, makes it possible to collect semen all over the world and set up a unique genetic bank that can be used any time and any place. This method of cryopreservation is very important to maintain the genetic diversity of species. This genetic material in the form of frozen semen can be stored for many years. An additional and important aspect is that it can be easily transported around the world. After thawing a straw, containing the frozen sperm of a Black-Necked Crane, the number of living cells (30 - 40%) and their mobility is the same again, as it was just before it has been put in the nitrogen tank. This method of storing sperm (cryopreservation) has proved to be simple and easy. Semen can be collected and stored no matter where you are. No expensive equipment is needed. Cryopreservation of semen can be of great value, if used to maintain the biological diversity of species (Convention Rio) A new and unique cryopreservation protocol suitable for on farm use has been established by us in Belgium to freeze and preserve valuable semen for many years
