It's better to kill yourself by jumping off of the screen than to let Shadow drain your health bar. Falling off the screen just restarts the level, but running out of health means game over! :O
The only ideal way to defend against Shadow's spells is to fight back with your own ones. Jumping away from them is just too dangerous.
Try to stay as close to Shadow as possible, you'll have plently of time to kill him just as soon as he slows down.
