@skankspankr The "official" reason given was that the oxide from the tape on which the drums and bass were recorded was damaged. I believe this was done on an 8-track, so 1/2" tape for the masters. If the drums and bass were on tracks 1 and 8 (edges of tape) or if they had both been bounced together to either track 1 or track 8, I can see how there may have been some damage, but it seems like there would have been SOME damage to adjacent tracks (2 or 7) as well. I hated the '86 version, FWIW.

@FZmustacheFZ In the lyrics it says "(the verse that really goes here has been censored out & recorded backwards in a special section at the end of side one . . .)". That they were afraid is obvious.

@Django5198 Frank actually addressed that rumor at the beginning of The REAL Frank Zappa Book. He says it's not true in any way. He also shrugged off variations of the rumor featuring Alice Cooper.
