Beautiful song, and great cover! I like the fact that it works with a lower octave vocal, as opposed to the awesome range of Iva Davies. I think I like this just as much as the Icehouse one.

I used to love this band since I study in Melbourne...I even went several Live concerts.

I thought this was a great rendition of the song. They kicked up the tempo a bit and added their own sound to it which I think works for their musical talents. Good work IMO to the Whitlams.

oh man...my husband loves them too, we used to argue and now we just laugh it off. I don't like them, you do. It's ok and hey, we all have different taste. I might like it more if I didn't know the original and I love Icehouse. Sometimes a cover is better but not in this case IN MY OPINION only. Chill man :)

This is one of my all time favourite songs from Icehouse, but clip aside I think this is a pretty good version of this song. I have both versions on favourites.
Interperete songs how you want. It is still a great song.

I don't know if Iva asked Tim to do it or not, but if he did I doubt he would ask someone on the basis of sounding like him.
I don't think you would have to sound identical to Iva to pull this off, but you would have to have a strong voice and able to sing in a particular style (or completely change the music to suit your vocal style).
Sorry, as much as I like the Whitlams, I can't class this as anything more than OK (say 3 - 3.5 stars out of 5), and it certainly isn't brilliant.

I understand what you are saying, however I have to disagree. :)

Knowing both the Icehouse and listening to this, I tend to like the Tim version. I don't think this was a Whitlams collaboration, more a Tim doing his thing. I think it works. There is a really quirky sequencing (I think Jackie had something to do with that RIP), and a nice layering on the vocal. I think Tim was trying to rid himself of something here.

Personally, I think Tim is a very capable vocalist, but in this song it just comes off as flat and a little whiney to my ears, but then again, when was this released? There was a great deal of flat and whiney singing going on in the 90s, thankfully we're starting to move past it.
You mention the layering on the vocals, I quite like that too, but I think it's more of the lack of power in the vocals which lets the song down, the song is a very emotional type of song but Tim sounds too robotic IMO
