"You're all alone in a parallel universe, dude. You can take off your tie."

I remember sitting through this movie and thinking it was okay, until the last 2 minutes. Then I couldn't get out of my seat even after all the credits had rolled, I was so stunned by the beautiful ending. Truly a hidden gem!

this is my favuorite movie of all time. i once wrote to craig harrison he was nice enough to write back. wow! the ending i would love to know where zac is everybody has theories ranging from religous to science. the ending never ceases to make me stare and wonder!

@Easychord2 That's pretty much how I took it.

My initial though, when I first saw this film in the 80s, was that the effect had again taken place, and that Zac had shifted, perhaps to the place where the rest of humanity had already shifted.

@rolline He is already dead (sleeping pill overdose) when he is waking up at the beginning. (According to the trailer and the campfire sequence.) In my interpretation once somebody dies, he gets a copy of the world he just left to play with and once he is ready to move on, he can do it by dieing again. Since his first death coincides in time with the executing of a military exercise in his former lab, Zac misunderstands the whole situation - and that makes the whole movie grotesque.

This would be beautiful and terrifying at the same time.

It is impossible to explain the end of this movie, but we may assume the effect took place a second time which left Zac, dying in this very moment in the explosion, the last human.
Imagine! Is there some other intelligent life somewhere in the universe? We do not know. If not Zac is the only living creature left in the whole universe.
Not for long, however, since he is about to die soon ...
