when the bottom of the screw touches the battery with the magnet on the screw, does the screw just float in the air whilst stil touching the battery?

Nothing is "floating." It's hanging on the bottom of the battery, thanks to magnetic attraction from the magnet.

Ferromagnetic means that it can be picked up by a regular magnet.

Copper isn't magnetic. If your wire sticks to the magnet, it may not actually be copper.
