This is a quick example of how I changed my iPhones Sim into a Micro-Sim that I could use in my iPad. In this video I ordered a free iPad Sim from O2 (UK) and used that as a template. The link is http://freesim.o2.co.uk/sKTLPi92 but most networks will give them free, just check there websites.

The Micro-Sim I received from O2 comes in a pre-cut full sized Sim template, so you can then use this to reconvert your micro-sim back to a full size Sim using a bit of sellotape. You can then interchange it between your iPhone and iPad.

Alternatively I've ordered an actual adapter from http://microsim-shop.com/ as I don't fancy using tape every time, and this cost about £5.

If you try this, take your time, it's better to cut off less than more. However I do not accept any responsibility if you encounter problems or cut too much off or cut in the incorrect place and your sim does not work. You take the risk as I did to give this a go, so good luck!

Nb. To make the iPad see the iPhone Sim you need to put a legitimate Micro-Sim in iPad and sync up to iTunes. If you're going to be using O2 I suggest and O2 sim. Once you're synced it should ask about activating SIM/iPad. Once it's sync'd and completed what it needed to do, go to your iPad, swap out the legitimate Micro-Sim and put in your newly created iPhone Sim. Then go to 'Settings', 'Cellular Data', 'APN Settings' and change the APN from ibrowse.o2.co.uk to idata.o2.co.uk and change the username from 'browse' to 'vertigo' (minus all the quotations). This should then work!

  • I don't really know how to put this but the data plans for 3 are quite discusting and are all 24 month contracts, so if I sorted a contract for a simple mobile broadband SIM and trimmed it down to a microsim, would that work for an iPad? I know this is what the video is about but I'm just making sure its a valid reason why I should be ripping apart a SIM card :)

  • @samithebrit96 Yeah it should be exactly the same as a regular phone sim. You'll probably need to change the data settings if it's on another network other than O2. You should easily be able to find these via google.

  • what if we cut that gold chip ???

  • @ghabrestoon Apparently some sims may result in you chopping some of the gold area, this shouldn't be a problem. There are three main areas (in the middle) on the sim that are vital that they don't get touched but by using this template that should not happen.

  • Great video mate, After watching this I just ordered a free micro sim from O2 so i can cut my tmobile sim to use on my iPhone 4 that i pre-ordered cant wait for 24th June!!! wooohoo! 512mb ram!! lol epic pwnage!

Do you guys think it will work on the iphone 4 tho? what if they coded it for only official microsims?? :(

  • @Spinalc0rd No it should work on the iPhone 4, it's a new standard of sim so if you get it right and it works in your iPad then it'll work in the new iPhone.

  • those looking to cut their sim card, get a proper sim card cutter as you'll be able to convert it back into a standard size if needed.

  • @lowgericoh Yep

  • I cut mine a little bit short on one side, so i filled the gap with a tiny bit of blu tack and used a knife to make sure it was flush. Worked great, thanks!

  • Enter: goo.gl\8ONjl and get your own iPad 2.

  • I did it ! it was touch and go for abit. but she pulled through. HELLO NEW IPHONE ! thanks by the way ! would never have dared to try if it wasnt for this !

  • Wouldn't it be so much easier if you used the micro sim card tray as the template to draw around the sim card to get a perfect fit first time ?

  • Ahh, the age old quote of - 'Houston, we're in'

  • Now u know this clip is Stupid right?

  • Thanks VirtualGeezer. I managed to do mine just by watching this and seeing where you cut. Very helpful thanks muchly
