  • Left Chicago when I was 6, in '54, for Cincinnati. We'd return 2x/yr to visit thru 8th grade. By 9 or 10, I'd ride downtown from Franciscan St, Xfer to the subway for a ride around the loop, & head home. I loved riding those old cars. Great seeing them again!

(And yes, lukebccb, I certainly hear those wheels on those loop curves, too (probably unforgettable for anyone who's heard it).

In later years, I took the Northwestern DT to ride the subway. Couldn't compare to the EL, not even close!

  • I can hear the wheels screeching!

  • I remember the trains going in the same direction on BOTH tracks on the Loop.

  • Cool!

  • cool! when I was a kid in Chicago, I'd ride the el all over the place...4 cents went a looong way in the 1940s :)

  • the line that was is now green line

  • The ERIE is long gone from SL Tower (State Line) all the way across northern Indiana. One would be hard pressed to find any signs that it ever existed. I know from SL west it utilized trackage rights on the C&WI some of which still exists now owned by NS, I believe.

  • i wonder what line is that right now!
