Left Chicago when I was 6, in '54, for Cincinnati. We'd return 2x/yr to visit thru 8th grade. By 9 or 10, I'd ride downtown from Franciscan St, Xfer to the subway for a ride around the loop, & head home. I loved riding those old cars. Great seeing them again!
(And yes, lukebccb, I certainly hear those wheels on those loop curves, too (probably unforgettable for anyone who's heard it).
In later years, I took the Northwestern DT to ride the subway. Couldn't compare to the EL, not even close!
The ERIE is long gone from SL Tower (State Line) all the way across northern Indiana. One would be hard pressed to find any signs that it ever existed. I know from SL west it utilized trackage rights on the C&WI some of which still exists now owned by NS, I believe.

I remember the trains going in the same direction on BOTH tracks on the Loop.

cool! when I was a kid in Chicago, I'd ride the el all over the place...4 cents went a looong way in the 1940s :)
