@tucsonia I totally agree. Don empathizes with Peggy more than a lot of people he knows. When he found out Anna died, he broke down in front of Peggy. After Anna died, in a way, Peggy become his new confidant and friend, similar to Anna, although with a professional overtone. Also because of the fact that they both come from working class backgrounds. Don is hard on Peggy but also values her talent and skills.

@Klymenthis Don empathizes with her because she's coming up the harder way, Brooklyn working class than, say, Roger and Peter who had things handed to them, never min that Don himself was a dirt-poor farm boy. This was shown earlier when Don visited her at the mental hospital after her "surprise" motherhood. Don is ruthless but he is not a sociopath; he shows more caring to his subordinates than many other powerful bosses do.
