In the Netherlands of the 1920s, Dreverhaven (Decleir), a dreaded bailiff, is found dead, with a knife sticking out of his stomach. The obvious suspect is Jacob Willem Katadreuffe (van Huêt), an ambitious young lawyer who worked his way up from poverty, always managing to overcome Dreverhaven's personal attacks against him. Katadreuffe was seen leaving Dreverhaven's office on the afternoon of the murder. He is arrested and taken to police headquarters, where he reflects back on the story of his long relationship with Dreverhaven.

@Subject134127 This music is mostly recomposed and reorchestrated by Bart Visman, sadly he is only mentioned for orchestrations at the end credits.

Great movie. The freshness and empathic Jacob contrats really well with the selfish Draverhaven. I like this depiction much more than that of Star Wars with Luke and Dartvader; Star Wars is way too cooked and too canned for my taste.

I love Jan Decleir, great actor! If you like Karakter and Jan Decleir, make sure to watch the movie "Daems" also.
