Wing Chun Training

Hello this is Ben Jacobsen with a video response to Sifu Zeigler's video on the stance. In this particular video we were discussing the relative merits of a stance with the feet closer together vs. one with them farther apart.

I felt that the most important part of this video was at the end when Sifu Zeigler stated that the most important part of the stance was feeling like your grounded. I think that a lot of people forget that the purpose of the Wing Chun stance is to connect you with the ground and the power it has to offer.

Especially when you are first begining Wing Chun practice by far the most important thing to concentrate on with your stance is a feeling of being grounded.

Look forward to posting more videos in the future, have a great day and train hard!

  • You are wrong. I allmoust favorited you! The way you are standing like this is because your oponent coud not kick you in the groin!

  • @InterceptingDragon You say I am wrong? Very well then, post your own videos and show me the correct way.

  • I dont say you are wrong! Master Wong says you are wrong and he is world know martial arts pro! He is more competent you will ever be! Are you with me?

  • No... Master Wong is not saying I'm wrong - you are. You are the one writing these messages. If you want to say I'm wrong thats fine - I welcome the discussion. However, you must be able to provide examples of what you mean.

  • Your stance is right, but your explanation why people must stand like this is wrong! How can I provide video with words?

  • There isn't just one reason to stand like this - there are many. You are correct when you say that one of the reasons is to protect your groin. However, another reason is to ground yourself so that your techniques have enough power behind them. I'm glad you finally agreed that my stance is correct!

I even think that you are being generous in giving him that one of the reasons you stand like this is to protect your groin. It is a slight benefit but it is not the reason you stand like that. You were right in saying that it is for grounding/power. Now it does improve grounding and power for a number of reasons.

  • When in goat stance I find the most grounding when my shoulders are above my hips, and my hips are above my ankles. Most importantly that pelvis has to be tucked in.
