Well, I'm no scientist, so I have no idea why, but if you look at a water drop, the shadow strangely appears on the same side as the light is coming from, so that's how I paint them.

i got a question sir/mam i want to draw rain but i want it with a background of tress how do i do that?

not easy! have a look at this video ' Relaxing Rain/Storm Sound 2/2' it isn't a tutorial but I would probably use angled marks like the ones shown , good luck.

The image is actual paint (scanned in). I reversed it in G.I.M.P bit by bit and saved every step to make the individual frames.
The movie was put together in windows movie maker.
