Kerryman(born Killarney) Paddy Joe Wilkie's audio on his love of Irish Soda bread baked by his son Bob. Bob always had a tub of the pops favorite butter, Ireland's Kerrygold butter to go with the delicious bread.

  • Irish Soda Bread

    4 c flour

    1 tsp baking soda

    1 tsp cream of tartar

    1/2 tsp salt

    1/2 stick butter or margarine

    1 1/2 cup buttermilk

    1 1/2 cup raisins

    Mix in first 4 ingredients. Hand mix butter in. Add buttermilk & raisins. mix together well, knead 5 minutes. Shape into oval & with knife make a cross on top. Place on baking sheet dusted with flour & bake for 1 hour at 350 degrees. When done, remove from sheet & place bread on waxed paper. Rub bread with butter.

  • My grandmother was from Co. Mayo and she made awesome soda bread with raisins. I miss hearing the accent...all my relatives from there are gone now.

I love the accent too. and glad I recorded his voice. Every time I make a soda bread, I think of mom & dad and still smile..You made me smile today too. Thank you.

    Soda bread and Kerrygold are definitely things I miss from my travels to Ireland. Actually, Irish food and Irish dairy in general!

  • I love Ireland and Irish food and butter are really yummy. I have cherished memories of our Irish mom baking soda bread, some plain, other with raisins and some with caraway seeds. They were a special treet.
