The Navy succeeded in foiling an attempt made by suicide LTTE (Tamil Tiger) terrorists to attack two vessels carrying essential food to the Northern civilians. The Navy was able to destroy two of the LTTE vessels and seize another
Naval Spokesman Commander D.K.P. Dassanayake expressed their full support to the supply of essential food to the North continuously whatever obstructions were made by the ruthless terrorists. He said three LTTE vessels attempted to attack two merchant ships Mercs Ruhuna and Mercs Nimalawa, carrying essential items to the North, when the ships were about one and half nautical miles away from the Mailawa coastal area. The Navy attacked the ships. Two were destroyed while one was deactivated and towed down to the shore. The Navy believes that six LTTE cadres were killed. That they have been launching attacks since the A-9 road was closed on August 11th 2006 by them and tried to undermine efforts to dispatch food to the Northern people.
