Star Trek XI with a better(?) soundtrack (II)

All in all, comparing Trek soundtracks is like comparing diamond collections at the Smithsonian, it's easy to find a favorite, but I wouldn't call any of them weak.

Great editing! Now, if you could just put the original series Enterprise in there instead of that horrible Ryan Church "thing" everything would coalesce.

You can't score ST:TVH the same way you'd score ST:TMP or the other films. It's much more light hearted and while it was fun, it didn't provide the material for a memorable dramatic score. I like Rosenman's score. It's reminiscent of his Lord of the Rings main theme, but it fits well into the tone and style of the film. Personally, I still think Goldsmith's TMP score is the defining Star Trek score and the single best ST music, even if it has to be more abstract / cerebral to match that film

I love this music - but to me it's too specific to that particular scene in Star Trek IV. Kirk's line from ST4 during the scene in question - "My friends, we've come home." Is what this music is all about. To me, Giacconno's score for this scene "Enterprising Young Men" is the right tone and mood. Because it's not Kirk coming HOME to the Enterprise, it's him MEETING her on the eve of his first adventure! And I agree with Josh95851 that they hadn't yet EARNED that classic theme yet!

The soundtrack makes a world of difference. Now I don't hate the "new" enterprise so much. Just a little.

As much as I love the music from the older Trek films I'd have to say that using TOS theme right away wouldn't have been THAT great from the start. I remember watching an interview with the composer of the new film and he said that he wanted to make it so that the characters EARNED that classic theme instead of just handing it to them from the start. And the payoff was worth it because that final scene with the classic theme was just brilliantly put together.

The reason why the score for The Voyage Home is so weak is because it was not an original score written for a Star Trek movie. Leonard Rosenman plagiarized himself by lifting all of the score's themes directly from the score he wrote for Ralph Bakshi's 1978 attempt at Lord of the Rings.

@davidusk2 "Earpiece larger than your ear"? It's about the same size as many bluetooth headsets, not bigger at all! Original series designs not practical? Which? A bridge design admired by modern military, a sickbay which you see all around the world, a comunicator decades ahead of its time, as mobile/cell phone manufacturers prove. The WIzard of Oz is brilliant though!!! Live Long and Prosper!! :D

@spectre0075 Terrible comeback!! More information would not have made the soundtrack sound any better. It's sub-par for the movie. He's a fine composer, it's not a TERRIBLE score, the "theme" he's used is good, but this is NOT his best work! It's THAT simple! To pay tribute to Alexander Courage he could have just used the Star Trek theme more effectively. That's all we Trekkies wanted, we're easily pleased, as proved by how many of us sat through Star Trek: Enterprise! Live Long and Prosper! :D
I'm a near-lifelong Trekkie who actually liked the new movie, but wasn't overly happy with the score, so THIS has really made me smile!! THAT is the correct theme for THAT creww at THAT stage in their carreers! Well done sir!!! :D

Star Trek IV, definatly the worst score. Star Trek XI second worst, but it's like being kicked on the left shin instead of being kicked on the right shin differance.
