Angel the Cruelty Dog

Angel the American Bulldog when the Hillside SPCA was called to her house on cruelty. She was underweight, had no shelter, and could barely move more than a couple feet on her short chain - where you see her walk in this video is as much room as she had. I had just missed recording her stretching out her paw to try to get a treat we had thrown too far out of her reach. This is why we are so against chaining dogs out for life. This is what we think of every time we think of an outside dog. What kind of life is that? She had been purchased from a pet store and was about 1 year old when we were called to the house. I am always amazed by the mental anguish suffered by the person who has to see the dog languishing and suffering at the end of a chain. I'd like to see us as a society start taking people to court for mental anguish who chain dogs outside...as it's too hard for us to watch, and we suffer right alongside them. I wish - unfortunately in this area anyway, so many people just don't care. I'm sure you find that everywhere though! It's not always easy going on cruelty calls for the SPCA, but the ones like Angel make it worth it. Her new owners recently brought her back for a visit, and it's obvious they adore her. There's one dog that never has to worry about being on a chain again. (And I think of all the videos I've taken, her 'after' video has to be my favorite - especially after watching this one.)

That's what we wonder all the time - why get a dog if you're only going to chain it out? At least she doesn't have to worry about it anymore!

Often we offer the owner a choice, to either give us the animal right away or be charged with cruelty. In severe cases we do charge people, but in most cases it's just not possible. That's why we rely on people to be responsible and report people that they see abusing or neglecting animals so that we can check it out. We were just happy to get Angel released to us so that she could be found a good home!

Dozens of communities have either banned tethering and chaining or have included tethering provisions in their animal protection ordinances. Please make a promise to all dogs who are trapped at the end of a chain in your neighborhood that you will work to add your community to the list.

I have a hard-nosed attitude to cruelty and neglect to animals. Confront the owner with maximum prejudice. If I don't hear apologies and pleading noises that sound like remedies, I get really unpleasant and I go and fetch a few equally unpleasant friends. There's no excuse for it; certainly none that I have any patience to listen to.
