  • Will people stop bringing Silas into the conversation. He is a fictional character and doesn't represent Opus Dei in the slightest.

  • Sir, I know many Opus Dei priests and members. They are amonst the most outstanding people I know. They don't get involved with Internet commentary; they are too busy doing more important things. This priest speaks well -- has a sense of humor about the whole thing. I don't know why people are so curious about mortification -- and have such strongly negative opinions about it.

  • self discipline

some people NEED their ass kicked

  • Members of religious orders are required to ask for permission before performing corporeal acts of mercy specifically to avoid abuse. Self denial is meant to distance one from love of the material world and focus one on the spiritual. It is a very scriptural practice: Ecclus. xxxv. 2-5 1 Peter ii. 5 Tob. xii. 8 Joel ii. 12 Matt. vi. 16-18 Ex. xxxiv. 28 1 Esd. viii. 21, 23 Ps. xxxiv. 13 Ps. lxviii. 11, 12 Dan. ix 3 Acts xiii. 2, 3 Jonah iii 5, 10 Matt. xvii. 17-20
  • Who cares what you sick bastards do as long as you keep your nasty hands off children.Your corrupt "church" teaches that your born with sin and makes you feel guilty for living. If fool's want to believe that they are guilty for bieing comfortable so be it but take a step back and look at how other christians live

  • ... then there's the argument that since God gave you a nice body, you shouldn't go beating up on it

  • It's so weird (to me) how he talks about it so matter-of-factly. I feel like mortification should be upsetting; if it's just a routine thing then isn't that kind of missing the point? Don't discipline and repentence inherently involve a lot of guilt and emotional discomfort? Mortification makes sense to me in an abstract/theoretical/literary way, but in practice most people (ie Silas!) have too many complicating issues to carry it out in the right spirit.

  • What is much more painful than the pain inflicted by mortification are the moronic posting on this site by 'people' who wouldn't know God if He was standing in front of them! I am involved in the 'work' and I love being a with people with a a common goal - to serve Christ.

  • Hey, I am "very involved" with the Work out here in CA, and it's not a big deal -- only a fraction of the members do bodily mortification. Sure all people are able to do evil -- so what? In general, The Work looks toward Christ and remains silent when criticised -- although they do some PR when required. The Work just helps people grow as Catholics -- people like me! Go to my videos and you'll see some people from the Work on day-trips -- normal stuff!

  • Mortification is not as mainstream concept as brushing teeth and watching movies, things you grew up with especially in these self-absorbed attitudes.

Even the most holiest of people on earth are still capable of committing the most heinous crime, ask them. That is why membership or association with an organizational name will not speak for itself--with all due respect to this priest and other genuinely good members.
