and also since the horsepower at the rear wheels is usually a lot less that at the flywheel/crank shaft, does this mean the motor is putting out say 485-500 HP?

you have to tell us how you can get that much from a 4 banger?

@Reese2279 It doesn't sound like you know too much about these cars, or forced induction, or making power, or tuning.... if you want to learn or build your own, I'd suggest starting with a book, say Maximum Boost by my friend Corky Bell. I don't think it's my job to teach everyone online how to make power with a four cylinder or miata specifically.

PS, you have the power equation backwards...might want to start with the basics, then move on books on FI.

Sorry, didn't mean to piss you off, just a wee bit hard to believe that a 1.6 even with NOS and a supercharger can produce 400HP at the wheels. What is the 1/4 mile time?

@Reese2279 It's not a 1.6 liter. Nor does it have a supercharger, nor nitrous. It runs high 10's in the high 130's with mediocre 60ft times. This was nearly a decade ago, I haven't tried to go faster, or install a two step etc. I am more interested in roadracing these days.

Stock miata engines tent to come apart at 250hp.

I am not one to throw the bull shit flag but this is hard to believe. I have 4 of these cars and know them inside and out. i am fairly certain these HP numbers are a bit stretched. If you could, can you please elaborate on your build? Maybe a run down of parts used...

@Reese2279 Search 1000hp four cylinder cars, those DSM guys do it all the time lol. Engines can make power it's just some people don't like to do the work or don't know how so they put a big motor in their car... lazy

umm im calling 400whp on stock internals on 1.8L BS... im just sayin also what rearend and trans you running... also if it has been on the dyno where is that video? and like reese said where is the video of the low 10 1/4? i can post a video of any car and say it make 400 whp i want to see video backing up your very outrages claims... in closing i am calling you a lair

Look, i'm going to leave you alone, since i can feel your blood pressure rising. But you have to understand you don't need 400HP to do a burn out. I can in my 97 and i only have what 140 (and i just had my clutch replaced) if you video'd it running a low 10's in the 1/4 mile, maybe people wouldn't be so skeptical..... calm down......have some dip.
