April 9, 2008 with Jonathan Mover on drums. A great version of the Zappa tune. Roger Steen sounds just like him and Jonathan Mover pulls off some great fills throughout.
the only one even vaguely 'blowing it" is the camera person depriving us of Steen's workout, for the most part... just set it wide and let it do it's job!
@StickInZee I agree with you 100%. Part of the Zappa thing IS the discorse/Stravinski-esque thing. The speeding up at the end is just going along with the guitar line. Music is and will always be subjective to the individual listener. Olflatop ISN'T wrong, he just doesn't hear it like we do. And that's not to say WE are right. It's just music and you can't please everybody.J. Mover is just a guy that's probably really excited to be playing with a real good bunch of living legends.....ENJOY!
@StickInZee His timing is fine. His syncopation doesn't groove at all though, as far as I'm concerned. He's overplaying. If he'd just keep his fills in the pocket, he'd be fine. That increase in tempo at the end is pretty meaningless also, to my ears.
I don't see or hear one blown fill. As a matter of fact, he's incredibly creative and playing some serious shit effortlessly. Once again, please point out the 'blown' drum parts.
Rushing it...? No, the timing is rock solid. Is it faster than the Zappa version, yes, but that doesn't mean they are rushing it, it means they're doing their own version. As for the drummer blowing it...? Please tell me where, at what point does he blow it? I've watched this video several times; every polyrhythm is perfect, every over the bar line fill lands on time, every displaced note comes out on the 'one' and the band is tight as hell.

A tribute to Frank Zappa and the Mothers. Bless them. Their heart's are in the right place. But, I'm stuck on the original from Freak Out!
