On October 28, 2011 at 9:15 pm, several hundred of the 99% plus Angela Davis marched from the Critical Refusals conference in West Philly, where she was the keynote speaker, to Occupy Philly base camp (aka City Hall). After a spontaneous march around City Hall, she addressed the crowd, which had grown to an estimated 1,000 people.

This video captures the ecstatic meet-up between those of us waiting at Occupy Philly with those who marched across town to join us, chanting, "This is what a flash mob looks like!" and "We are unstoppable! Another world is possible!"

Angela Davis speaks for about 10 minutes, using the people's mic because our amplification was not strong enough for the crowd. She quotes Audre Lorde, engaging the dialectics of our dynamic force complete with its internal contradictions, and she concludes with the world-echoing call from Oakland: "General Strike! Occupy Everywhere!"

  • Thats all we need is pinko blowhard davis talking to all you anarchists.she needs to occupy her anarchist hero castro in cuba

  • @Siguror6 b) Housing loans need to be capped in proportion to household income. Two decades ago the average mortgage was 6 times the average annual income. Now it's 13 times. To buy a house you are forced to bid away more and more of your earned income to out-compete the other guy who the banks are also offering a loan for hundreds and thousands of dollars. This doesn't serve the home-buyer and contributes to nation-wide Debt Deflation (wwwmichael-hudsoncom)

  • @Siguror6 ....

Instead, finance needs to become a public utility, run according to democratically-determined public-interest regulations. Think of the housing crisis:

    a) the Fed could have refinanced every single American mortgage at a discounted rate to stop the recession; instead it gave those discounted loans to Wall St, and they pocketed them or used them to buy up assets overseas.

  • @Siguror6 Now we're getting somewhere. "What would you build instead?" is the whole point of Occupy.

Personally I think the most pressing problem to address is the dominance of the finance sector over both the economy and politics all around the world. The European Central Bank (ECB) is currently writing the budget policies of entire nations who have lost their sovereignty. Goldman Sachs people now include the PM of Italy and the head of the ECB.

  • @thectexperience so what, is different from, "your point is"? for example, what system that exists on earth today would you rather live in? Or would you create another more compassionate system but avoid the mass murders of Stalin, etc. Your Utopian system would have to be able to tolerate divergent points of view or you are no better than that which want to replace. See?

  • @Siguror6 Wow, great. You badmouth Angela Davis and Occupy with the tired argument that Communism just doesn't work, then when you're faced with the argument that the system Communism attempts to replace -- that is, global capitalism -- has only come to dominate the Earth at the expense of millions of lives, your answer is: "So what?"

You can hardly claim to support this post-WWII US history while washing your hands of responsibility. Might is right - is that all you guys have got left?

  • @thectexperience and your point is?

  • @Siguror6 Fortunately I wasn't born in the US so I have no need to flee.

I'm glad your wife is safe, as for the rest...your ideas, the pre-emptive strike mentality, writ large as the tenet of US foreign policy, have caused more deaths than the Holocaust in the decades since WWII alone. Are you aware of how many countries the US has fought and killed in? Name a random country and most likely the answer is Yes, the US has armed police states and tortured and killed those who resist its dictates

  • @thectexperience You are really a biggot aren't you. I don't beat my wife I don't drink, ah let's see what other drival did you spew, oh yes I have a passport, don't hate the entire world, but myself and my neighbors have no concerns about minority violence as they will be shot first and asked questions latter. I haven't killed anyone around the world as you say. Didn't your mommy ever tell you don't stay where you're not wanted or unhappy? Grap an inner tube, Havana waits! LOL

  • @Tougemaster06 I'm inclined to agree. It does have those effects though, even though I doubt the CIA fomented its use.

Having saidthat, you should look up MKULTRA and think before you brand something a wild conspiracy.
