Written by country music composer and member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame Harlan Howard, "Everglades" was one of the most popular cuts on the original Kingston Trio's fifth studio album, "String Along." All five albums made it to #1 on the Billboard charts in 1959 and 1960, and the KT was the first group ever to accomplish this feat. The song includes a joshing reference at the end to Trio competitors on the charts The Everly Brothers, whose influence on the recording extends beyond the final line to the Trio's use of a jumbo Gibson 12-string guitar played by Dave Guard, a musical element that the Kingstons picked up from the Everlys.

  • I love this song. I mean I LOVE THIS SONG. But the reference to the Everly Brothers kind of spoils it at the end because its a serious song and not meant to get stupid at the end. Still my favorite version and one of my favorite songs of all time. Harlan Howard was a fantastic writer.

  • @clif19821982 - y'know Cliff, I always kind of agreed with your point, even 50 years ago wen the song came out. There is a dark irony in the song that you couldn't quite call humor, but the Everlys bit is gratuitous, even though the KT is (as others here note) using the EvBros intro from "Bird Dog." Didn't need that ending - but it's still just a great example of what made the KT so special. Those harmonies!

  • my buddy Peter A. pointed this next EVERLY BROTHERS JOKE out to me..

This song intro sounds exactly like The Everly Brothers Song: Bird Dog & Listen to the LAST sentence of this song....

on 2.10 minutes they sing Everlies instead of Everglades ....

  • @tickyreal - there's a bit more about this in the song notes above.

  • I love this song! Thank you so much for posting this. :^)

  • @MikeMirarchi - Thanks, Mike and to all the other commenters. Great, fun music indeed.

  • Thank you for posting. 'Everglades' is in my Top 10 records EVER. Might even be No.1. I sang this on 'Pot Of Gold' when I was a kid. Spent my childhood listening to The Best of the Kingston Trio, the Seekers & the Lettermen. Have made my career as a singer in a vocal group and these three (four) guys were such an inspiration. RIP Nick, John & Dave. Long live Bob. Love 'em!

  • "Running like a dog through the everglades"...God, I love this song! And the K.T.

My vinyl is worn out, so thanks for this.

  • My first band was a Trio Cover Band--1960-63. I was 14. Always loved their music and attitude. Wonderful to learn something new--that bit about the Gibson Jumbo 12 and the Everly Bros. Makes great sense. Thanks.

  • This song takes me back to my childhood, growing up in the 50's and 60's when my parents had several KT albums. Those were the days!

  • Love this song.. I run wild throw the everglades, but fishing for snook!!!
