"A-Rovin'" is the first chantey in Stan Hugill's collection. When I first covered that ground, in May 2008, I worked up an interpretation of the main version, "A":

Here, then, by way of clean-up, is my rendition of another version offered, one meant to exemplify the form collected from John Short by Sharp and by Terry. One usually doesn't hear this form nowadays; the interjections of "Bless you, young women" and "Now mind what I do say" (which I inadvertently changed to "Now mark...") will sound quite surprising to people used to the common form.

This is my 200th video in this series, now Sept. 2009. It is interesting for me to look back and see how my style has changed. I sang the other in a more laid back, maybe saucy fashion, while this one is meant to be jaunty and more emphatic.

  • I am trying to make a comment and these shanties are too short. I am enjoying the different variations of the same song and also the info you shared. I've been to the link site and will be checking out the entire list. You have a 'good' voice...please pardon me, but I had to say that. I also agree that we all should sing, regardless of our voices. Thanks for the history, the info, and the music.

  • @MyMoppet52 Thank you so much for your audience. I means a lot to have people engage with the project.

  • Hi there. I'm really appreciating your uploads.......they're inspiring me to dust off my vocal chords and to get singing accapella again, something which I used to love. I've just ordered Stan Hugill's book too. Massive thanks for sharing your pleasures....it's great to hear and to watch someone who clearly loves singing so much! Buddhasiha

  • Excellent rendition. Thanks Ranzo.
