Ham Radio Station 8J1RL at The Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition in Antarctica stirs up a huge DX pile-up on 20 Meters. 8J1RL was operating split; transmitting on 14.225MHz, and listening on 14.220MHz. What resulted was a zoo which was punctuated by some particularly bad behavior on the part of one Canadian operator.

This video of DX QSOs was recorded in Oklahoma City from a Yaesu FT-950 using a Hustler 4BTV vertical antenna at ham radio station WE5I.

  • Does this VE3AXW guy think that this type of behavior will make people want to respond to him? I only just started studying for my license but I think etiquette will win you more respect than getting a rare DX this way. Being a pilot I completely understand the necessity for everyone to respect proper conduct. In flying it can be a life and death issue!!

  • @SkylaneCaptain Thanks for your comment. While everyone else is tied up in a pile-up, I like to listen across the band for DX stations CQing. No pile-up, no shouting. I get alot of nice DX contacts that way. 73 de WE5I

  • Heard them on 14.225 yesterday. would have made contact but its right on the general band edge.

  • @karr24 Thanks for the comment! There are quite a few ops who cross the line in the name of catching DX. Not such a good idea.

  • I enjoyed listening to this. I noticed at 1:36 a op says " pick up my call and ill get out of your hair"..then 2:02 he says again acknowedge my call and ill get out of your hair.

  • @Bill1960D Thanks very much for your comment. 73 de we5i

You hear this kind of behavior all of the time on rare DX pile-ups. One guy starts to repeat his call more than twice and soon the other folks in the pile up follow suit. What's annoying about VE3AXW is that he's acting like a jerk, and threatening to continue until he is satisfied. If you notice, the Antarctic station working split, and is likely simply tuning 1-2 khz up or down to avoid him. This is among the rarest DX out there, but no excuse for acting like that.

  • nice vid
